September has seen the start of the party political conference season and it’s quite obvious from the news making the headlines that we are entering a highly politicised period for the housing and mortgage markets.

Throughout the summer, the Government put a number of potential policies into the public domain which could have a significant impact on our sector, not least the raising up the flagpole of the abolition of stamp duty, followed closely by a property tax, followed by the potential to keep stamp duty but stagger payments. Not surprisingly, there is anecdotal feedback that such fundamental changes have effectively put many buyer/seller intentions on hold.

At the end of the month, the Government signalled the introduction of digital ID cards for all those who want to work in the UK, which could be a significant game changer. Read Beth Rudolf’s comments in Mortgage Solutions to see how we believe this could shift the purchase/sale process.
